The work has started on this large junction project and it’s scheduled to continue to 11th September.

The main changes are:
– Two new controlled pedestrian crossings, replacing the existing pedestrian island on Wimblehurst Road and adding a new crossing near Hurst Road
– Introduction of a contraflow cycle route on West Parade, with dedicated traffic signals facilities at the junction
– Modernised traffic signals, using the latest technology to improve efficiency and safety
– A new 20mph speed limit on West Parade
– Additional 7.5 tonne weight restrictions on surrounding roads
– New wayfinding signage to support local cycle routes
We welcome these changes. The contraflow cycle lane on West Parade will be good, especially as there is a traffic light controlled exit on to North Parade. And the new pedestrian crossings will make things safer at both Wimblehurst Road and Hurst Road.
Extending the weight restrictions should improve the problem of large lorries getting stuck part way down West Parade, and the 20mph limit there is welcome too.
