Cycle Infrastructure Design Workshop – 19th March 2016

Three of the UK’s leading cycle infrastructure professionals will be coming to Chichester on Saturday 19th March 2016 for a Design Workshop being run by ChiCycle, the Chichester cycling advocacy group.

Mark Strong, Managing Consultant of Transport Initiatives, Phil Jones, of Phil Jones Associates, one of the UK’s Leading Independent Transport Planning Specialists, and Dr Rachel Aldred, Senior Lecturer in Transport at the University of Westminster will be equipping delegates with the practical skills needed to better design how we use the space in our towns, cities and the countryside.

Councillors, officers, campaigners, members of the public and businesses interested in sustainable travel are all invited to attend this opportunity to keep up-to-date with the latest guidelines used in London and other cities in the UK and beyond which are at the forefront of the very best city planning. The aim is to ensure we use and share space in the best possible way.

With a growing population we need to find the best way to move people into and out of our villages, towns and cities and to limit congestion, pollution and unhealthy lifestyles.

This is not about leisure cycling, but about putting cycle infrastructure in place that will enable a genuine modal shift, to the benefit of everybody. Businesses are increasingly looking for walkable and cycleable neighbourhoods in order to recruit and retain a young and dynamic workforce, fit for the future.

Learning from the best examples in the UK and elsewhere will equip us to better plan long-term. There will be a tailor-made session for WSCC Members and Leading Officers on the afternoon of Friday 18th March 2016.

There will be a sliding scale of charges based on your income. ChiCycle are asking leading businesses to donate to sponsor this workshop to help cover the travel and overnight accommodation costs. If you can help with the planning and fundraising for this event, please get in touch with Sarah Sharp (sarah.ccc13@gmail.com).

Further details to follow but please put the date in your diary – Saturday 19th March – the day we all learn better how to redesign our spaces!

Mark Strong and Rachel Aldred were keynote speakers at the Horsham Cycling Summit in June this year. You can view their presentations here:
